Dr. Richard Lester in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Infectious Diseases has been accepted to speak at the 2010 mHealth Summit in Washington, DC on November 9. Richards work with cell phones and HIV clinical work in Kenya has also recently been highlighted in
Nature Outlooks magazine.
The 2010 mHealth Summit is the key opportunity for leaders in government, private sector/industry, academia and not-for-profit organizations to share information and experiences related to the intersection of mobile technology, health research, and policy. The Summit will emphasize cross-sector dialogue, including industry and government leaders and visionaries who will provide their perspectives on the future of mHealth.
The mHealth Summit will:
- Highlight cutting-edge biomedical, behavioral and public health research in mHealth;
- Showcase innovative, hands-on mHealth technology exhibits and demos;
- Offer unprecedented networking opportunities with various stakeholders;
- Explore the key opportunities and challenges in mHealth research and programs in developed and developing countries.

A team of seven volunteer graduate students from UBC left on August 9, to travel to Tolima, Columbia for a four-week Accessible Science Initiative project. Founder and President, Olga Pena, a PhD Candidate working for NGDI member Bob Hancock plans to reach up to 1,000 students from grades seven to 11 in the Tolima University catchment area. Her group will train high school teachers simple science presentations about water borne parasites and proper washing of food supply using inventive educational presentations. These presentations, which use equipment easily at hand for demonstrations, are in a manual that will be made available to high school teachers for sustainable education. The First Annual Symposium on Neglected Global Diseases has added a speaker from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the lineup in September 18-19, 2010.
Dr. Carol Dahl, Director of Staff for the Global Health Program, works as a deputy to the President, Global Health, to facilitate progress and performance against Global Health’s priorities. She also serves as a liaison for the Program team in the fields of science and technology . In addition, she partners with the Global Health Strategy team in shaping the foundation’s overall global health strategies. Dahl was previously Director, Global Health Discovery.

The NGDI-UBC has been awarded an International Research Collaboration Workshop Grant in the amount of $10,000 by the Office of the Vice President Research & International. This is support of a collaboration between NGDI-UBC and Dr. Shyam Sundar of Banaras Hindu University, India. Dr. Sundar is an expert on Leishmaniasis and will be speaking at the First Annual Symposium on Neglected Global Diseases on September 18-19, 2010 at UBC.
